How to track your AI search visibility

AI engines are answering customer questions before they ever reach your website. Here is a simple monthly routine to find out whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are recommending your business or sending people to a competitor.

To track your AI search visibility, run the same set of customer-style prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews once a month, then log whether your business is named, how it is described, and which competitors appear instead. Comparing the same prompts month over month is the only reliable way to see whether you are gaining or losing ground in AI answers.

Traditional rank tracking tells you where you sit on a Google results page. It tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you when someone asks "who's the best roofer in Naples," or whether Google's AI Overview names a competitor before a single blue link appears. AI answers are becoming the first thing many local customers see, and most business owners have no idea what those answers say about them. This guide gives you a repeatable monthly routine to find out.

Why AI visibility needs its own tracking

AI search is fundamentally different from the ten blue links. An engine like Perplexity or ChatGPT reads multiple sources, decides which businesses to mention, and hands the customer a short list. You are either on that list or you are invisible. There is no "page two" to climb from. And because these models pull from your Google Business Profile, your reviews, directory citations, and the content on your site, the answer can shift as those inputs change.

That is also why you cannot check this once and forget it. Models update, your competitors publish new content, and your own profile and reviews move. A monthly check turns AI visibility from a mystery into a number you can watch. This is the same discipline we apply when we do AI search optimization for clients across Collier and Lee County.

Step 1: Build your prompt list

Your tracking is only as good as the questions you ask. Write 8 to 15 prompts the way a real Southwest Florida customer would type or speak them. Mix a few categories so you see the full picture:

  • Direct "best" queries, "best roofer in Naples FL," "top med spa in Bonita Springs," "who does seawall repair in Cape Coral."
  • Problem-first queries, "my AC stopped working in Naples who do I call," "I need a dentist near Marco Island."
  • Comparison queries, "compare HVAC companies in Estero," "best pool service Golden Gate vs North Naples."
  • Brand queries, your own business name, so you can see how the AI describes you and whether it gets your facts right.

Keep this list fixed. The whole point is to ask the exact same questions every month so the changes you see are real, not just different wording producing a different answer.

Step 2: Run them through the four engines

Each engine pulls from different sources and behaves differently, so check all four. Open a fresh or signed-out session where you can so your personal history does not skew the result.

ChatGPT

Ask each prompt and note whether you are named and what it says about you; with search enabled it cites live sources.

Gemini

Leans heavily on Google's view of you, so your Google Business Profile and reviews carry a lot of weight here.

Perplexity

Shows numbered citations for every claim, so you can see exactly which pages it trusts to describe your market.

Google AI Overviews

Run the prompt in Google and check the AI summary at the top, note if it names businesses and whether you are one.

Step 3: What to log

Keep it simple. A spreadsheet with one row per prompt and one column per engine is plenty. For each cell, record:

  1. Mentioned? (yes/no), were you named at all in the answer.
  2. Position, first business named, in a list, or only after a competitor.
  3. Accuracy, did it get your services, location, and contact details right, or invent something wrong.
  4. Competitors named, who showed up instead of or alongside you. This is often the most useful column.
  5. Source cited, where Perplexity or ChatGPT pulled the recommendation from (your GBP, a directory, a "best of" list).

Add a date at the top and save a copy each month. Over a few cycles you will see patterns: maybe you show up well on Gemini because your Google Business Profile is strong, but you are invisible on Perplexity because the "best of Naples" listicles it cites do not include you. That tells you exactly where to focus.

The "wrong facts" problem

Watch your accuracy column closely. AI engines confidently state outdated phone numbers, closed locations, or services you no longer offer. A confidently wrong answer can cost you customers, and fixing the underlying sources, your profile, citations, and site content, is exactly the kind of cleanup that moves the needle.

Tools vs. doing it manually

Manual checking is free, takes 30 to 60 minutes a month, and gives you the richest understanding because you are reading the actual answers and seeing how customers experience them. For most local businesses, manual is the right place to start.

If you would rather not run every prompt by hand, our free AI visibility checker runs a starter set of prompts for your business and shows you where you stand right now. There are also paid AI-rank-tracking tools on the market that automate this at scale, which makes sense once you are managing many prompts or multiple locations. The honest truth is that the tool matters less than the habit. A simple spreadsheet you actually update beats an expensive dashboard you ignore.

Step 4: Turn tracking into action

Tracking is the easy half. The point is to move the numbers. When you spot a gap, the fixes usually trace back to the same foundations: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, strong and recent reviews, consistent citations across the directories these models trust, and clear, answer-shaped content on your site that states plainly what you do and where you serve. Those are the inputs AI engines read, and improving them is the work behind getting cited.

If you want the full picture of how these engines decide who to recommend, our guide to AI search optimization walks through it. And if you would rather hand the whole routine off, that is what we do, see our plans or request an audit to start with a clear read on where your business stands in AI answers today.

Frequently asked questions

Once a month is the right rhythm for most local businesses. AI models update, competitors publish new content, and your reviews and profile shift over time. Monthly checks let you see real trends without the noise of constant fluctuation, and they keep the routine light enough that you actually do it.
AI engines have some built-in randomness and personalize based on your history and location. To reduce this, ask the exact same fixed prompts each month, use a signed-out or fresh session where possible, and focus on patterns across several checks rather than reading too much into any single answer.
No. You can track AI visibility manually with a free spreadsheet in under an hour a month, and our free AI visibility checker runs a starter set of prompts for you. Paid AI-rank-tracking tools help once you are managing many prompts or multiple locations, but the habit matters more than the tool.
Trace the wrong fact back to its source. AI engines pull from your Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews, and your website. Correcting outdated phone numbers, hours, services, or addresses across those sources is what eventually corrects the AI answer, since the models read those inputs.
Usually because the sources those engines trust, your profile, citations, the local 'best of' listicles, and your own site content, do not clearly establish you for that query yet. The fix is improving those inputs so the model has a reason to name you. That is the core of AI search optimization.
No. Your Google ranking is where your page appears in the blue-link results. AI visibility is whether engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews actually name and recommend your business in their answers. They overlap, but you need to track them separately.
