How to show up in Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews now sit at the top of many local searches, often above the map pack. Here's how a Naples or Collier County business actually earns its way into those answers.
What Google AI Overviews actually are
An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google places at the top of many results pages. Instead of a list of blue links, you get a few sentences answering the question, with a handful of cited sources linked alongside. For a search like "best roofer in Naples" or "how much does seawall repair cost in Cape Coral," Google's Gemini model reads multiple pages, synthesizes an answer, and shows where it pulled the information from.
This matters for local businesses because the AI Overview now sits above the map pack and the organic listings on a growing share of searches. If your business is named or your page is cited in that summary, you are the first thing a Naples or Bonita Springs customer reads. If you are not, you are below the fold before the conversation even starts. We cover the broader picture in our guide to AI search optimization, but this page is specifically about Google's version.
What AI Overviews pull from
AI Overviews do not invent sources. Google's system grounds its answers in pages it already trusts and ranks for the query, then layers in entity data it holds about your business. In practice, inclusion comes from a few specific places:
- Pages already ranking organically. Google overwhelmingly cites sources from the top of the existing results. If you are not on page one for a query, you are very unlikely to be cited in its AI Overview.
- Your Google Business Profile. For local intent, Google leans on your GBP for hours, service area, categories, reviews, and Q&A. A thin or unclaimed profile is a missed signal.
- Structured, extractable answers. Clear headings, direct first-sentence answers, lists, and FAQ-style blocks are easy for the model to lift. Walls of marketing copy are not.
- Authority and consistency signals. Reviews, accurate NAP citations across directories, and mentions on local sites tell Google your business is real, established, and the right answer for this area.
How local businesses earn inclusion
There is no button to opt into AI Overviews and no way to pay for placement. You earn it by being the page Google would already pick. Here is how we approach it for SWFL clients.
Rank first, get cited second
Strong on-page and local SEO for the target query is the price of admission to the AI Overview.
Answer the question outright
Lead each page with a 40-60 word direct answer the model can quote, then expand.
Optimize the Business Profile
Right categories, full services, photos, posts, and review velocity feed the local layer.
Build local authority
Reviews, consistent citations, and mentions on trusted SWFL sites confirm you are the answer.
Structure pages the way the model reads
The single biggest lever most local businesses can pull is structure. Use a clear H1 question, sub-headings that mirror how people ask ("how much," "how long," "do I need a permit"), and put the answer in the first sentence under each heading. Add a real FAQ section with schema. We build pages this way on purpose, with an answer block up top exactly like the one at the start of this guide, because that is the unit AI engines lift.
Cover the local entity, not just the keyword
AI Overviews reward content that demonstrates genuine local knowledge. A Naples HVAC page that mentions snowbird-season demand and salt-air corrosion, or a Cape Coral marine contractor page that speaks to canal seawalls and boat lifts, reads as authoritative in a way a generic template never will. Specificity is a ranking signal and a trust signal at the same time.
A note on local volatility
AI Overviews show up inconsistently. The same query can trigger one today and not tomorrow, and what gets cited shifts as Google retests. Treat inclusion as a moving target you work toward with durable fundamentals, not a one-time switch you flip.
How to track whether you appear
You cannot improve what you cannot see. There is no native Google report for AI Overview citations, so tracking takes a deliberate process:
- Run your real queries manually. Search your core local terms, logged out and in your service area, and record whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites.
- Watch for the click pattern. In Google Search Console, look for impressions that hold or grow while clicks soften on informational queries. That divergence is often the footprint of AI Overviews answering on the page.
- Test the assistants too. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity your local questions and note whether your business surfaces. Visibility patterns overlap, and our AI search optimization service tracks all of them.
- Re-check after every change. Citations move, so spot-check monthly rather than assuming a win sticks.
The bottom line
Ranking in Google AI Overviews is not a separate game from local SEO. It is local SEO done well enough that Google chooses your page as part of its answer. Get the fundamentals right, the index presence, the structured pages, the Business Profile, and the authority signals, and inclusion follows.
