GEO vs AEO vs SEO: what is the difference

Three acronyms, three different surfaces, one shared foundation. Here's what GEO, AEO, and SEO each mean, where they overlap, and what a local business in Southwest Florida should actually do about each.

SEO earns ranked blue links in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) earns the direct answer in featured snippets and voice results. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a citation or recommendation inside AI answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. They share one foundation: clear, trustworthy, well-structured content that proves who you are and what you do.

Three acronyms, three different surfaces

The confusion is understandable. GEO, AEO, and SEO all describe the work of getting found online, and they use a lot of the same techniques. But they aim at different surfaces, and the surface decides how you win. Think of it as three doors into the same house.

SEO targets links

The classic ten blue links and the local map pack, you compete to rank a page for a query.

AEO targets answers

The featured snippet, the "people also ask" box, and the spoken voice-assistant reply, you win the one answer, not a list.

GEO targets AI recommendations

The synthesized answer an AI engine writes, you win by being the source it cites or the business it names.

What is SEO?

SEO, search engine optimization, is the original discipline. The goal is to rank your pages in the organic results and, for local businesses, in the Google map pack. When someone in Naples searches "metal roof repair near me" or "Cape Coral seawall contractor," Google ranks pages and Google Business Profiles, and SEO is the work of earning a high spot.

The surface is a list of links. The reward is a click to your site or a tap on your map listing. The levers are familiar: relevant on-page content, fast and mobile-friendly pages, a strong Google Business Profile, local citations, and credible backlinks. For service businesses in Collier and Lee County, local SEO is the workhorse, it's still where most ready-to-call demand lives. See our breakdown of local SEO for the full picture.

What is AEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, narrows the target from "rank in a list" to "be the answer." It covers Google's featured snippets, the "people also ask" expandables, and the spoken replies from voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. These surfaces don't give the user ten options. They give one.

Winning the answer rewards content that's structured like an answer: a clear question, a tight 40-to-60-word response right up top, then supporting detail. Headings phrased as real questions, lists and tables for scannable facts, and FAQ blocks all help an engine lift your exact words. AEO has been around since featured snippets launched, and it's the natural bridge to GEO, the habits that win a snippet are the same habits that get you quoted by an AI.

What is GEO?

GEO, generative engine optimization, is the newest of the three, and it's the one most local businesses haven't caught up to. The surface here isn't a link or a snippet. It's the answer an AI engine generates from scratch: Google's AI Overviews at the top of search, plus ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT "who's a reputable HVAC company in Bonita Springs," the model writes a paragraph and may name a few businesses. GEO is the work of being one of them.

That's a different game. There's often no click at all, the AI delivers the answer in place. You win by being the source the model trusts and cites, which means consistent facts about your business across the web, content that clearly answers the questions buyers ask, structured data the model can parse, and a reputation (reviews, mentions, citations) the AI reads as proof. This is our core differentiator, and we go deep on it in the pillar guide to AI search optimization and on our AI Search Optimization service page.

How GEO, AEO, and SEO differ at a glance

  • Surface: SEO = ranked links and the map pack. AEO = the single featured answer or voice reply. GEO = the synthesized AI answer.
  • Engines: SEO and AEO live mostly inside Google and Bing search. GEO spans Google AI Overviews plus ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot.
  • What you win: SEO wins a click. AEO wins the answer slot. GEO wins a citation or a recommendation by name.
  • How you measure it: SEO tracks rankings and traffic. AEO tracks snippet ownership. GEO tracks whether AI engines mention you, cite you, and get your facts right.

The shared foundation

Do the foundation once, win on all three surfaces

GEO, AEO, and SEO are not three separate projects. They sit on the same base: accurate, consistent business facts everywhere; content that genuinely answers buyer questions; clean structure and schema; and a real reputation. Build that once and you compete for links, answers, and AI recommendations at the same time.

This is the part the acronym debate misses. The same things move all three needles. Clear writing that answers a real question helps you rank, gets you snippeted, and gives an AI clean material to quote. A well-optimized Google Business Profile with consistent name, address, and phone feeds the map pack and feeds the AI's understanding of who you are. Honest reviews build local trust and signal credibility to a model. There's no version of "good GEO" that sits on top of weak SEO.

What a local business should do about each

You don't have to pick one. You sequence them, because each builds on the last.

  1. Get SEO right first. Fix the technical basics, claim and optimize your Google Business Profile, build out the service and location pages buyers search for, and earn local citations. This is the floor everything else stands on.
  2. Layer in AEO. Restructure your best pages to answer questions directly, lead with a tight answer, add FAQ sections, use lists and tables. You'll start picking up featured snippets and voice answers, and you'll be readable to AI engines.
  3. Then push on GEO. Audit how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews currently describe your business and your category, fix the facts they get wrong, add schema, and build the content and reputation signals that make the AI comfortable recommending you.

For a Southwest Florida trade or practice, the order matters because local intent is still mostly in search, but the buyers asking AI engines for a recommendation are growing fast, and almost nobody local is optimizing for them yet. That gap is the opportunity. Want to see where you stand on all three surfaces today? Grab a free SEO and AI-visibility audit or compare our plans.

Frequently asked questions

No. SEO earns ranked links in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a citation or recommendation inside the answers AI engines generate, like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. They share a foundation, but the surface and how you win are different.
AEO (answer engine optimization) targets the single direct answer inside search and voice assistants, like Google's featured snippets. GEO targets the synthesized answer an AI engine writes from scratch across multiple tools. AEO is the bridge: the habits that win a snippet also help an AI quote you.
SEO first. Strong local SEO and a well-optimized Google Business Profile are the floor everything else stands on, and most ready-to-call demand in Collier and Lee County still lives in search. Then layer in AEO and GEO, since the same foundation feeds all three surfaces.
No, and you shouldn't. They run on the same foundation of accurate business facts, question-answering content, clean structure, and real reviews. Build that once and you compete for ranked links, featured answers, and AI recommendations at the same time. The smart move is to sequence them, not pick one.
SEO tracks rankings, map-pack placement, and organic traffic. AEO tracks whether you own featured snippets and voice answers. GEO tracks whether AI engines mention you, cite you, and describe your business and services accurately. Each surface needs its own measure.
Because the share of buyers asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for a recommendation is growing fast, and AI Overviews already sit on top of Google search. Almost no local Southwest Florida business is optimizing for those surfaces yet, so the early-mover gap is wide open right now.
