AI search optimization (GEO), in plain English
AI search optimization (also called GEO or AEO) is how you get named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI Overview for a recommendation. Here's the whole idea, without the jargon.
Search is changing fast. A growing share of people no longer scroll a page of ten blue links. They type a full question into ChatGPT or Google and read the answer the machine writes back. That answer names a few businesses and skips the rest. If you are not one of the names, you are invisible, even if you rank well in the old-fashioned sense.
This page is the plain-English overview. It tells you what AI search optimization is, why it matters for a Naples or Collier County business, and where to go next if you want to go deeper. For the full playbook, see our AI search optimization guide or the AI search optimization service.
What GEO actually means
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. You will also see AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and AIO (AI Optimization). They all point at the same goal: showing up inside AI-generated answers rather than just on a results page. We use the terms loosely and interchangeably, because the work is the same.
The shift is simple to describe. Old search hands you a list and lets you choose. AI search makes the choice for you and hands you a short answer with two or three recommendations. Your job is to be a recommendation, and to be the source the model trusts enough to quote.
SEO vs GEO, in one line
SEO is about ranking a link a person clicks. GEO is about being the answer a person never has to click past. The two overlap heavily, but the winning page looks a little different.
How AI engines pick who to name
AI engines do not invent recommendations out of thin air. They pull from the open web, from local data sources, and from the patterns they were trained on. When someone asks ChatGPT for a good roofer in Naples, or Google's AI Overview answers a question about seawall repair in Cape Coral, the model is leaning on a handful of signals:
Clear, quotable content
Pages that answer one question directly in a few sentences are easy for a model to lift and cite.
Consistent local data
A clean Google Business Profile, matching name/address/phone, and accurate hours feed the local layer these engines read.
Third-party mentions
Reviews, directories, and citations elsewhere on the web tell the model you are real and trusted.
Structure and schema
Headings, lists, FAQs, and structured data make your facts machine-readable, not just human-readable.
Notice that none of these are tricks. Good GEO is mostly good, honest SEO done with the machine reader in mind. That is why a strong local SEO foundation and a polished Google Business Profile still matter so much. They are the raw material the AI reads from.
Why this matters in Southwest Florida
Local service searches are exactly the kind of question AI answers love to handle. "Who does pool cage rescreening near Marco Island?" "Best HVAC company in Bonita Springs?" "Affordable dentist in North Naples?" These are short, intent-heavy, location-bound questions, and the engines are getting confident at answering them with a name or two.
For a Naples-area trade or practice, that is both a risk and an opening. The risk is being left out of the answer your competitor is already in. The opening is that most local businesses have done nothing here yet, so the field is wide open for whoever structures their site and profile correctly first.
Where to go deeper
This was the overview. We have written longer, more specific pieces on the parts people ask about most:
- How ChatGPT recommends local businesses, what actually happens behind the scenes when someone asks an AI for a recommendation, and how to earn a spot in that answer.
- AI Overviews vs ChatGPT vs Perplexity, how the major engines differ, where each pulls its sources, and what that means for your strategy.
- Content structure for AI citations, the page layout, headings, and answer formatting that make your content easy for a model to quote.
If you would rather not learn the mechanics and just want it handled, that is what we do.
